Verona is an ancient city with a long history still visible today in the many monuments, churches, bridges over the Adige and buildings that surround it. It’s known worldwide for the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet and the Arena which begins the city-sightseeing tour. With a single 24-hour ticket you can visit all the city and hop on and off these cute red bus whenever you want. Verona city-sightseeing offers two different tours lasting 60 minutes that can be combined, which is what we recommend in order to see the whole city. The Arena, the starting point for both, is the third largest amphitheater after the Coliseum and that of Capua. It is located in Piazza Bra, and each year hosts lovers of opera for the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, an experience to do absolutely if you are in the town during the opera season. In the same square there are also the town hall, the Palazzo della Gran Guardia and the Lapidary Museum. Then the first Verona city-sightseeing tour continues through the Pravadal and Corso Porta Nuova Gardens to the Basilica of San Zeno, masterpiece of Romanesque art. Then it reaches Castelvecchio ,the medieval fortress built by Cangrande II della Scala and the impressive Porta Borsari which is an integral part of the Roman walls. The tour proceeds to the Roman Theatre, still fully in use, which organizes every summer the Shakespeare Festival and the Verona Jazz Festival. The first tour ends at the Porta Leoni, the ancient entrance to the city from Roman times.
The second tour Verona city-sightseeing leads to Juliet’s grave and the sixteenth Giardini Giusti, a haven of peace in the city. It comes after St. Stephen, an early Christian basilica, one of the oldest of Verona. Then it climbs towards the hill of San Pietro to admire a splendid view from the terrace, very romantic at sunset. Descend to go to Piazza Duomo, or Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, the first Christian church in Verona. Reach Piazza delle Erbe, where it is recommended to get off the bus to take a nice walk. In Roman times the square was the Forum where held each kind of activity. On the square there are beautiful frescoed buildings dated back to the Middle Ages called Mazzanti houses, the Town Hall, the Lamberti Tower, which boasts a beautiful view and the House of Judges. The Palazzo Maffei, Baroque, closes to the west the square while another building to be mentioned is the one of the guilds which dates back to medieval times. From Piazza delle Erbe you get faster to Juliet’s house, from medieval times. A symbol of all lovers it is always very busy and if you want you can look from the famous balcony. While you are walking you often encounter the Roman archaeological finds that blend well with the medieval art, Venetian and Austrian buildings and monuments of later ages. Then we come to Piazza dei Signori through the unusual Arco della Costa, from which hangs a whale rib. The square in the center keeps a statue of Dante Alighieri and is bounded by the Loggia del Consiglio, the Palazzo del Podesta and the Courts. Nearby there are also the tombs of the Della Scala family, thanks to which Verona lived heyday. Can Grande della Scala was also a patron of the arts and housed Dante and Giotto in Palazzo del Podesta. Next to the Scaliger there is the house of Romeo, a medieval building with Romanesque windows, Gothic and Renaissance. Then you can take the bus to go to city-sightseeing Castelvecchio, majestic medieval fortress.
