Verona is an ancient city with a long history still visible today in the many monuments, churches, bridges over the Adige and buildings that surround it. It’s known worldwide for the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet and the Arena from which we start the city-sightseeing tour. With a single 24-hour ticket you can visit all the city and hop on and off this cute red bus whenever you want. Verona city-sightseeing offers two different tours lasting 60 minutes each but can be combined, which is what we recommend in order to see the whole city. The Arena, the starting point for both the trips, is the third largest amphitheater after the Coliseum and the one of Capua. It is located in Piazza Bra, and each year it hosts lovers of opera for the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, an experience to not lose if you are in Verona during the opera season.
In the same square there are also the town hall, the Palazzo della Gran Guardia and the Lapidary Museum. Subsequently the first city-sightseeing tour Verona continues for Gardens Pravadal and Corso Porta Nuova until the Basilica of San Zeno, masterpiece of Romanesque art. Then the city tour goes to Castelvecchio, the medieval fortress built by Cangrande II della Scala and the impressive Porta Borsari which is an integral part of the Roman walls. Then it proceeds to the Roman Theatre, still fully in use, in this theatre each summer you can see the Shakespeare Festival and the Verona Jazz Festival. The first tour ends at the Porta Leoni, the ancient entrance to the city from Roman times.
The second tour Verona city-sightseeing leads to Juliet’s grave and Giardini Giusti (1500 AC), a haven of peace in the city. It comes after St. Stephen, an early Christian basilica, one of the oldest of Verona. Then the tour climbs towards the hill of San Pietro to admire a splendid view from the terrace, very romantic at sunset. Then the tour goes down to Piazza Duomo where the Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, the first Christian church in Verona. The tour reaches Piazza delle Erbe, where it is recommended to get off the bus to take a nice walk. During Roman times the square was the Forum , the epicenter of all the city activities. On the square you can see beautiful frescoed buildings of the Middle Ages called Mazzanti houses, the Town Hall, the Lamberti Tower, which boasts a beautiful view and the House of Judges. The Palazzo Maffei, Baroque, closes to the west the square while another building worth mentioning is that of the Guilds which dates back to medieval times. From Piazza delle Erbe you get faster Juliet’s house, from medieval times. Juliet’s house is the symbol of all lovers, always very busy and if you want, you can look from the famous balcony. While you are walking, you will see the Roman archaeological finds that blend well with the medieval art, Venetian and Austrian buildings and monuments of later ages. Then we come to Piazza dei Signori through the unusual Arco della Costa, from which hangs a whale rib. The square in the center keeps a statue of Dante Alighieri and it is bounded by the Loggia del Consiglio, the Palazzo del Podesta and the Courts. Nearby there are also the tombs of the Della Scala family, thanks to which Verona lived the best period. Can Grande della Scala was also a patron of the arts and in the Palazzo del Podesta he hosted Dante and Giotto.
