A tour through Italy in the footsteps of the Greeks

The discovery of the Greek cities in Italy from Naples with a visit to the Archaeological Museum and the Decumani (the name given by the Greeks to the streets they built). Continue to Paestum, grandiose archaeological site, which houses wonderful temples and monuments, including that of Demeter and Poseidon. Walking along the ancient Via Sacra you can admire the ancient town and the Foro Italico. An exceptional place that makes clear the idea of the uses and customs of the Greeks. The tour resumes to touch, in Puglia, the city of Metaponto. In the Archaeological Park you can admire the sacred part with the ruins of the temples of Hera, Athena, Aphrodite and Apollo; in the urban part, however, remain the remains of houses and the theater. The Archaeological Museum preserves the many artefacts found in the surrounding area and the “Palatine Tables”, that the remains of the Doric sanctuary of Hera. The path leads up to Crotone, in the archaeological area of Capo Colonna, which is one of the most important places of worship of Ancient Greece: the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia. The next step is Reggio Calabria with the visit to the National Museum of Magna Grecia, the National Archaeological Museum and Archaeological Park Area sacred “Griso – La Boccetta”. Then you embark for Sicily. The first stage is exciting Taormina and Giardini Naxos with a visit to the wonderful temples and theaters. We continue to Syracuse, one of the cities of Ancient Greece’s most important and famous, with its great theater, the aqueduct Galermi and the fountain Arethusa. Syracuse is an open-air museum, just stroll through its streets to discover fascinating views and impressive monuments.
Last stop of the trip is Agrigento, the ancient Girgenti, which offers to the visitor the ancient Valley of the Temples and between ancient buildings and palaces, to capture its timeless atmosphere. At the end of the tour you can make an extension to the sea in one of the many islands of Sicily, or participate in other excursions.

The Magna Grecia in Campania

The journey to the discovery of archaeological sites and the most important examples of Greek civilization in Campania from Naples with a visit of the National Archaeological Museum. It continues with a walk along the Decumani, in the heart of the city. They are three parallel roads built to the urban layout grid typical of the Greeks, enhanced by the most important churches in Naples. The journey continues to Paestum, impressive archaeological site, which preserves almost entirely the ancient city walls. In the area of the visit you dive into another dimension, seems to go back in time. An ancient city offers to the visitor who is enchanted in front of the Temple of Demeter and Poseidon. Majestic buildings, Doric, among the best preserved of the Magna Grecia. Strolling on the site, along the ancient Via Sacra, you still can see the ancient settlement with the Forum, the temple of Hera and the Italico. An exceptional place in which it is possible to reconstruct the habits and customs of the Greeks.
The last stop of the tour is Cuma, thriving city of Magna Grecia and town remembered for the Sibyl’s cave. Cuma was the oldest colony and far away from the motherland. With the visit of the temples of Apollo and Jupiter on the acropolis and the thermal baths and the amphitheater in the lower town, ending this exciting journey through time. Discovering the Greek colonies in Basilicata and Puglia

Taranto is the base of the tour of the colonies of Magna Grecia that includes Metaponto and Policoro. It starts with a visit to the rich Archaeological Park “Saturo”, a town 12 km from Taranto, where the remains of a sanctuary, of the town and some villas. In the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, instead, you can admire pottery, gold objects and statues.
The journey to discover the colonies of Magna Grecia continues by going to Metaponto, a city founded in the eighth century BC by the Achaeans. The visit to the archaeological park is divided in the sacred, with the ruins of the temples of Hera, Athena, Aphrodite and Apollo, and in the urban area, with the remains of homes and theater. The Archaeological Museum preserves the many artefacts found in the surrounding area and the “Palatine Tables”, the remains of the sanctuary of Hera in Doric style. A short distance away, another city full of interest is the Greek colony of Heraclea, the current Policoro, with the interesting Archaeological Park. Greek Sicily coast to coast

The route through Sicily, in search of colonies of Ancient Greece, starts from Messina, a city founded by the Greeks of Euboea who left from here to spread throughout the region, just like this around, touching the provinces of Messina, Syracuse, Enna, Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo. A full immersion in the times of the Greeks, in an attractive setting and rich history. After Messina you move to Taormina and Giardini Naxos, colonies that have left altars, temples and theaters that make the environment truly magical. The journey continues along the Ionian coast to touch before Augusta and its Archaeological Area Megara Hyblaea and then Syracuse, colony under the tyrant Dionysius had great expansion in the Adriatic Sea. Important and vast archaeological evidence to visit: the Fountain of Arethusa, the large theater and the aqueduct Galermi. An open-air museum of ancient witnesses and streets that intersect each other. The next stop is Aidone, ancient city in Sicily, whose excavations have unearthed several artifacts including the Venus of Morgantina. Abandoned Aidone you go to Agrigento, famous for the Valley of the Temples and other artifacts such as the temples of Castor and Pollux, the gardens of Kolymbethra and the Ecclesia. Selinunte is the stage immediately following, on the southwest coast, with many remains to be admired in the archaeological park.
The journey is the halfway point, it’s back on the Mediterranean Sea with Termini Imerese, near Palermo. Here you can see the temple of Victory, and other artifacts. Rich archaeological zone for Tindari, the final stop of the tour that ends in Messina, where you can walk along the ancient city wall in the large area of the excavations. The trip can be extended with the stay in one of the small islands next to Sicily.

A dip in Calabria in the colonies of Magna Grecia

The journey in the footsteps of the Greek testimonies in Calabria begins at Sybaris, one of the richest colonies of Magna Grecia, with the visit of the Archaeological Park in which you can still see an ancient necropolis, the ancient urban layout and the remains of the temples. The path then leads to Crotone, in the archaeological area of Capo Colonna where stands the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia, one of the most important places of worship of the Magna Greece from the Archaic to the decline of the city. It then proceeds to Acerenthia, archaeological site with a new recovery project. Several excavations have an heritage of arts very important. The exploration continues with Locri. The route starts from the National Museum, then you come to the temple Ionic Marasà and sacred areas voted to Demeter and Zeus. Along the ancient walls, you can reach the door of Aphrodite and a large area of excavations showing the ancient greek town, the port, the “sacello” of Aphrodite, and other artifacts. Last stop of the trip is Reggio Calabria. Then trips to the National Museum of Magna Grecia, the National Archaeological Museum and Archaeological Park Area sacred “Griso – La Boccetta”.
